I'm Wilbur Turner LL.D. (Hon.) and I'm asking for your vote. I am a parent, student advocate, and experienced public educator with an extensive record on nonprofit boards. For the past year, I've led a youth development program, training young people in project management, curriculum development, research, facilitation skills, and group leadership. I believe every child deserves a strong public school system that sets them up to thrive, and that parents and community members deserve a trustee who listens, shows up, and advocates on their behalf.I'm running because I strongly believe that public education is a critical investment in our youth and our future as a community. I'm honoured to already have the support of Lake Country voters, and I'd be grateful to earn the support of many more between now and October 17.Too often, Lake Country hasn't had real competition in these elections for school trustee. Residents deserve a real choice, and I have the qualifications and experience to fulfill the role's mandate and provide needed choice.I bring extensive experience as a parent, student advocate, and public educator to his campaign. I have volunteered on two successful local school trustee election campaigns and have served as a guest lecturer at UBC Okanagan for the past 13 years. I hold an honorary Doctor of Laws from UBC Okanagan and a humanitarian award, both in recognition of community service. My post-secondary education is in computer science and I work in the healthcare field for a nonprofit dedicated to community capacity building and harm reduction.I have spent the past year leading a youth development program, training participants in project management, curriculum development, research, facilitation skills, and group leadership. It's hands-on work that reflects my belief that young people do best when they're given responsibility and real tools to develop useable skills.I am the founder and president of Advocacy Canada, a national charity, and have served on multiple nonprofit boards in the Central Okanagan and beyond, including the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra and Okanagan Housing Cooperative. This has given me a thorough understanding of board governance that will serve well in a trustee role. I have also been a member of the Community Advisory Board for Homelessness in Kelowna for three years, was a member of the City of Kelowna Creates Cultural Plan Working Group and the City of Kelowna Community Safety Plan Project. I am a proud father of two and have two school-age grandchildren.
